The library which was opened in 1787, is located in the former college of the Compagnia di Gesù.
The original Jesuit collection was enhanced by the legacies of the brothers Giuseppe and Bartolomeo Mozzi and the Dominican Tommaso Maria Borgetti. The antique volumes are housed in precious 17th C.
surroundings under richly decorated ceilings. It is one of the most important libraries in the Marche region and contains approximately 350,000 volumes. A permanent exhibition dedicated to Father Matteo Ricci (Macerata
1552-Beijing 1619), Jesuit Missionary, was inaugurated in 2012.

Intended as a place of meditation of the Jesuits, the Specola reading room is on the third floor of the "Mozzi-Borgetti" library and covers an area of 250 square meters in a panoramic position: a place to read, to meet, to listen to music or to hold lectures and talks, free for use by the public.

The Lino Liviabella music listening centre, founded in the seventies, was a structure of the avant-garde as far as cultural activities in Macerata are concerned. Equipped with the listening room for groups and with individual places available, for some years it promoted the knowledge of music and was a point of reference for schools and musical associations. The structure was closed at the end of the eighties.
However, now an initial catalogue of the material has recently been assembled and, in the Mozzi-Borgetti Library, you can listen to music upon appointment (for small groups).
