Lauro Rossi Civic Theatre

Lauro Rossi Civic Theatre

In 1765, 46 noblemen from Macerata endorsed the building of a new civic theatre to fill the area that had been occupied by the old Town Hall, which also housed the ‘Sala della Commedia’.

The task was assigned to the greatest architect of the time, Antonio Galli, known as the Bibiena. His project was later readapted by the architect Cosimo Morelli who directed the construction. The theatre was inaugurated in 1774 and in 1884 it was dedicated to the Maceratesi musician Lauro Rossi
(1810-1885).

The characteristic bell shape of the theatre with its three orders of boxes and the gallery make it one of the prime examples of ‘Italian style theatres’.
